Did you know that humans might have been skipping for over 400 years? Historians point to medieval paintings of the 16th century where children were jumping rope on old European streets, although they also suggest skipping might have first originated in ancient China. Wherever it started, it spread through Europe and – thanks to early Dutch settlers – arrived in America (which explains the popular double rope jumping game Double Dutch).

Skipping became super popular here in the 1940s and 50s, especially in inner cities where it was easy, affordable and inclusive. TV got in the way for a while but in the 70s a focus on the need for exercise for health brought it back into children’s days. And while it's continued to face competition (from new trends, new toys, and more organised adult led play at schools), it's not going anywhere, in part thanks to National Skipping Day (this year on April 23rd) which encourages schools to get kids skipping for their good health. And it is healthy. Did you know skipping can give you a full body workout, build stamina, improve lung capacity and tighten your core Just go carefully if you are revisiting your skipping rope after a long time apart!
